While tooling around Nashua, my wife spotted a small used... oh, sorry... PRE-OWNED bookstore and suggested we check it out. We missed the entrance and had to drive further than we should have to return. We parked and my wife entered the empty store first. I was a little behind her.

"Mask?" the girl behind the counter said, reaching out to me. Like a fool, I took what she was holding and put it on. Then I realized how much I despise the stupid things.

My wife was already out of sight, lost somewhere between aisles 2 and 14. I went to find her then saw a few promising paperbacks. Actually, the store had a ton of paperbacks. Maybe as many as I do. $6. $6. $6. $6. Everything was $6. A shelf further in had Harlequin romances. $6. Eaaaaah. These weren't spotless paperbacks. I wouldn't even call them gently used.... uh... pre-owned. They were fairly aggressively pre-owned. Still, $6.

I found my wife. "I'm getting out of here," I said.

"I know," she replied. "These prices!"

"Yes, and I'm OFFENDED by this frickin' mask," I said.

So I headed for the exit. My wife was about 30 seconds behind. Our total time in the store couldn't have been more than two minutes.

I bet "Annie" has seen a lot of that. She thanked me as I left and didn't seem surprised.

BTW, I usually draw the line on used paperbacks at $1. If it's one I really want - as is always the case when I buy from Abebooks.com - I'll go much higher. But $6 for every book in the store? She's out of her mind.

My wife then told me that she was seeing Annie's used... grr... pre-owned... paperbacks as high as $12.

That's a good store to avoid. By year's end, my money says I won't have to avoid it.
