It looks like winter is finally here.

My house is remarkably warm, and I haven't yet turned on the heat (the thermostat is set at 50° but the house is in the high 60s) or lit the wood stove. Maybe tonight will change that... we'll see.

The south-facing, glassed-in front porch is doing what it's supposed to do. When the sun is out (which it isn't as often as I'd like) the porch is 45 degrees warmer than the outside temp. So on a 40° day, it's 85 on the porch and I open the living room windows to draw in the heat. I've put a bunch of 5-gallon blue water bottles on the porch. They retain the heat and keep the porch warmer at night. I should get more of those.

Just as importantly, the porch keeps wind from hitting that side of the house. The living room stays as comfortable as can be even when a biting wind is blowing.
