My wife and I saw Wicked at the discount theater yesterday. I'd give it 3 stars out of 5. The plot just isn't that rich. Of equal importance, this 2' 40" movie is just PART ONE. It might be a year or two before part two comes out. I wasn't aware of that when I bought the tickets. If I'd known, I'd have waited and watched it later when I could see them both.

IMO, Stephen Schwartz's music is the main reason to see the movie, and I do NOT think it is his best score. That honor, out of the three Schwartz shows I've seen, goes to Children of Eden (CoE)... which wasn't a commercial success despite music that grows and grows and grows on you, sounding better with every listen. In many respects, Wicked's songs sound like CoE's. I'd say the same of Godspell's. Each score has pieces that just "sound like" Stephen Schwartz sometimes to such a degree that a listener will wonder if a song in a musical isn't a ripoff of another in a different Schwartz musical.

micro: I don't know if you like musicals, but if you do, you'll REALLY like Children of Eden, especially if you watch it more than once. Here's a decent production of it: *** UPDATE: I changed the link to a different production with clearer audio.
