Zim >>> A Trifecta of budget busting deficit producing 'programs' ...

Good observations, and accurate. Had forgotten 'bout those.

That said, Nixon did nothing at all to combat the budget busting that had been going on, in fact he increased the problem - a fiscal conservative he was not. He still bears a huge part of the blame for the 'inflation and interest' fiasco that Carter inherited. Plenty of blame to go 'round for that little economic raping of America. My point was that Carter was in no way 'completely responsible' for the meltdown - he didn't stop it, true - but there were many to blame for it. The earlier democrats and republicans both built that bonfire, as you correctly point out - not just Carter.

Yes, Nixon got us out of Vietnam, toot sweet. He also recognized China, and sold Taiwan down the river. Don't have much good to say about his late grate(ing) 'ambassador' to the world either, the Henry Kissinger. The Vietnam withdrawal was a bloody disaster ... BUT it did get us out and stopped the American bloodletting that was going on. However, it sure as hell didn't stop the bloodletting of the rest of SE Asia. Like the genocide of the Montagnards and of 30% of Cambodia. The domino theory proved to be pretty damned accurate, despite the years of pooh-poohing it received and continued to receive.

Anybody still remember ole 'Spiro T.' ??

MonkeyTrots > I have never held Carter responsible for the incredible inflation and interest rates this country experienced in the late 70's/early 80's - but rather Richard Nixon and his quite heavy deficit spending, revocation of the gold standard, and his UNConstitutional Wage and Price controls,

I'm going to disagree with you here.

Nixon had to deal with Johnsons 'War on Poverty'. Kennedy's 'American Man On the Moon'. And Johnsons Vietnam War.

A Trifecta of budget busting deficit producing 'programs' which Nixon, thanklessly, had to deal with.

Nixon got U.S. out of Vietnam. Nixon got Americans to the moon. And 'We' lost the war on poverty.

Zim.
