Just four forces control all of nature's interactions. We're familiar with the electromagnetic and gravitational forces. The other two are the strong and weak forces, both of which operate across very small distances.

You'd think, because gravity and electromagnetism have infinite range, that they must be the two strongest forces. In fact, the strong force - which overpowers the repulsion of positively charged protons and binds them along with neutrons in atomic nuclei - is by far the strongest.

Roughly speaking, the strong force is 1,000 times stronger than electromagnetism and 100,000 times stronger than the weak force that promotes beta particle decay. It is 10^38 times stronger than gravity.

And I bet you thought gravity was king!
