The scientists in this group have it right - particularly since their group's purpose has nothing to do with supporting transgenderism. There are both transgender and normal atheists, after all. And there are both theist and atheist transgenders. The one has nothing to do with the other.

I wish the new "transgendered atheists" foundation lotsa luck.

Atheist Richard Dawkins, others, resign from Freedom from Religion Foundation board over pro-trans advocacy

One of the more interesting developments in recent years is how some leftists of varying degrees have felt compelled to abandon or even turn against their comrades who are pushing the limits of their ideology to extreme ends.

A recent example of that is renowned atheist Richard Dawkins resigning from the board of the Freedom from Religion Foundation after that organization rejected biology and science to embrace a pro-transgender position, Fox News reported.

Dawkins and two other board members resigned in protest after the FFRF took down a scientific fact-based rebuttal article authored by one of them in response to a psychology and emotion-based pro-trans piece published by an FFRF fellow that was promoted by the anti-religion organization.

Facts vs. feelings

According to The Telegraph, the controversy began in November when "non-binary" FFRF fellow Kat Grant published on the group's website a pro-transgender article titled "What is a Woman?," which asserted things like "any attempt to define womanhood on biological terms is inadequate" as well as that "a woman is whoever she says she is."

In response, FFRF Honorary Board member Prof. Jerry Coyne published on the same website a rebuttal piece titled "Biology is not Bigotry," in which he used science and basic biological facts to refute the arguments made by Grant.

However, after receiving some backlash from vocal pro-trans activists, FFRF co-presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor decided to remove Coyne's post and issued a public apology that stated in part, "Publishing this post was an error of judgment, and we have decided to remove it as it does not reflect our values and principles. We regret any distress caused by this post and are committed to ensuring it doesn’t happen again."

Two board members resign over atheist group's support for "quasi-religious" transgenderism advocacy

Prof. Coyne was, rightfully so, outraged by the group's decision and tendered his resignation from the FFRF board in an email that decried the taking down of his rebuttal article as "a censorious behavior I cannot abide."

"I was simply promoting a biological rather than a psychological definition of sex, and I do not understand why you would consider that 'distressing' and also an attempt to hurt LGBTQIA+ people, which I would never do," he continued.

Coyne added, "The gender ideology which caused you to take down my article is itself quasi-religious, having many aspects of religions and cults, including dogma, blasphemy, belief in what is palpably untrue ('a woman is whoever she says she is'), apostasy, and a tendency to ignore science when it contradicts a preferred ideology."

Joining him in resigning from FFRF's board was Prof. Steven Pinker, who in an accusatory message said the FFRF was "no longer a defender of freedom from religion but the imposer of a new religion, complete with dogma, blasphemy, and heretics."

Dawkins resigns over group's embrace of "silly and unscientific" protr position

It wasn't long before famed biologist and atheist Dawkins also resigned from FFRF's board, though his resignation letter to co-presidents Barker and Gaylor was a bit more conciliatory, even as he called them out for their embrace of the decidedly non-scientific pro-trans position.

"It is with real sadness, because of my personal regard for you both, that I feel obliged to resign from the Honorary Board of FFRF," Dawkins wrote. "Publishing the silly and unscientific 'What is a Woman' article by Kat Grant was a minor error of judgment, redeemed by the decision to publish a rebuttal by a distinguished scientist from the relevant field, namely Biology, Jerry Coyne."

"But alas, the sequel was an act of unseemly panic when you caved in to hysterical squeals from predictable quarters and retrospectively censored that excellent rebuttal," he continued. "Moreover, to summarily take it down without even informing the author of your intention was an act of lamentable discourtesy to a member of your own Honorary Board. A Board which I now leave with regret."

However, Dawkins ended his resignation notice on a positive note as he added, "Although I formally resign, I would like to remain on friendly terms with you, and I look forward to cooperating in the future. And to delightful musical evenings if the opportunity arises."
