Re: “Obviously I had to get building permits and submit an engineering drawing.”
Not so obvious. Home-add-on permits are not needed here. (Freest state in the union!) I once thought of adding on to my other house and mentioned needing a permit. My builder looked at me, perplexed: "What? They can't stop you from adding on to your house!!!" (It was like, how could a government do THAT????) LOL.

Towns like to come around periodically and ask about improvements to houses in the hope that someone will own up to having added a bathroom, granite counters, etc - things that will add to the property's assessed value for tax purposes. But they aren't allowed inside so if you tell them "Nothing," they have to take your word for it. They can, however, measure the exterior. They'll know if you increase the square footage.

Hi De,

yeah, it was a lot of work. Obviously I had to get building permits and submit an engineering drawing.

I designed this home initially with the thought of reaching retirement and being empty nesters but realized holidays would bring all the family together. My baby girl moved to Zim's neck of the woods so that made things less crowded but we understand. Its a hassle to be 500 miles away and have to drive that to be home. I get it.

Now they come home once in awhile but fly.

SO we use the empty bedrooms as my office and a guest room for my wife's sister who usually spends holidays with us to be with her family. Her other sister and brother live close by.

Gotta tell ya that this other sister is the oldest and is the remaining identical twin. Bonnie passed from cancer about ten years ago. Her husband dies about one year ago. So I am the oldest man in this large family.

I watch out for my widowed sister in law and her sons do a lot for her. She and my wife are very close as well as the other who lives in Cedarville where the University is my granddaughter attends and plays softball.

SO I am thinking attaching the garage to the front of the former garage and overlapping in the side yard.
