That was one of the hardest non-tech books I've read, MUCH harder than my prior Gribbin book. I think I started it in late October, so what does that tell you? I've also never trashed a book like this, except maybe for times I dropped books into swimming pools and the like. This one was just hammered. I'll have to buy a replacement, maybe in hardback.

While ISOTBB had some overlap with In Search of Schrödinger's Cat, most of it was new. Moreover, it didn't go into a lot of detail about the various physicists the way ISOSC did. It instead dug deep into their theories, their findings, and the interactions of the many particles and four forces. It was often overwhelming.

But worth reading? You bet. I learned a lot.

One funny story I'll tell you is that the book concludes with Stephen Hawking's model of the universe, circa 1984. The theory describes the universe as being like a globe composed of smooth space time. The Big Bang occurred at the globe's North Pole, expanding 4-dimensionaly south, with the equator being the point in our future where entropy and size will have reached their maximums. Thereafter, Hawking said, the universe will shrink back upon itself, eventually bouncing and expanding outward again. Gribbin wondered if it might shrink back DIFFERENTLY than how it expanded, but Hawking assured him that it would not. Gribbin says, "And on this subject, for sure, he's the boss."

Gribbin goes on to state, "Hawking's universe holds out the prospect of combining general relativity and cosmology in one grand theory of creation, and tells us that we already know all of the fundamental laws of physics.

The thing, is though, that Hawking was wrong. There is no shrinking or Big Bounce coming. The current evidence says that Hawking's closed universe doesn't exist. Our universe is open, probably expanding forever.

That's how Gribbin's book ends. After an incredible amount of conjecture time has now proven right, he and his hero blew it in the conclusion.

Re: “Death Doesn't Exist And May Just Be An Illusion, According To Quantum Physics”Thanks, ribit. Unfortunately, while many quantum phenomena have been observed, there is no clear understanding of why they act as they do. A conclusion that "death doesn't exist" could, at best, be termed a guess.

My own opinion is that time as we perceive it doesn't exist. That means life doesn't exist and, in a way, the headline must be correct - albeit, decidedly less reassuring. Still, "Cogito, ergo sum".

I'm currently 75% through my second quantum mechanics book, "In Search of the Big Bang." Good book. I'm finding it harder than the previous one even though the two are by the same author.
