re: "You can tell that the winter solstice was a short time ago (the 21st) by the fact that the sun is going down well to the left of the "V" in our hills. It won't be that way for long."

I got that right. The sun set today behind the mountain. What I didn't expect was the sun's sharp angle relative to the ground. No straight down sunset for us! In the first pic, it looks like it's setting to the left of the mountain.

Having a sunset at all was serendipitous. This time of the year, it's cloudy 9 out of 10 days. As it happened, though, today was cloud-free and Sunday might be as well. There may be snow on Saturday.

Scroll down for four photos that show the angle of descent. The last one came out nice... the others? Not so much. If you compare the photos to the one I posted on Dec 29, you'll see far more red. That's because the sun was lower and I was zoomed on it. The closer to the horizon, the more red. In fact, I took some that weren't so zoomed. Except for the proximity of the sunset-to-be, the sky was largely blue in those pics. In the final photo, you can see a little of what I'm talking about.

I captured a nice sunset on Friday. You can tell that the winter solstice was a short time ago (the 21st) by the fact that the sun is going down well to the left of the "V" in our hills. It won't be that way for long. I bet by mid-January, it'll be back on the right where I normally expect it.
