It's almost 4 a.m. Sunday. I was hoping to catch the Djokovic / Leheckha match, but I haven't been able to find a free site. So I hopped over to Youtube to find someone at least blogging it. That was disappointing. I'm a big tennis fan, but even I find it dull when all I can do is sit and watch the points rack up with a host who doesn't have much to say.

So I ended that stream and tried another. Jackpot. For legal reasons, the new stream still can't show the match - nor did I expect it to - but it DOES show a live animation of the match with real audio. Even the banter between hosts is decent... it's undoubtedly coming from ESPN or another network. So, they've got a computer reproducing the video with animation and overlaying it with sound, and they're able to stream it out to Youtube virtually realtime. If there's a delay, it can't be more than a second or two. Oh, it looks silly - the characters resemble those you'd see on an old Playstation game, but they really are mimicking the action realtime, even down to the players wiping their faces. Some folks seeing this are criticizing it in their Youtube comments, but I can get past the cartoonish look and appreciate the match. This is way better than just seeing the score tick by or even listening to the match on a radio. I think it's great and I'm a bit surprised that it's legal. It probably won't be for long. I expect the audio will get blocked once TPTB figure out that they're losing subscribers and why.
