Cause and effect ?

Remember just because two facts coincide (exist at the same time) (ie it is clear. it is very cold) does NOT mean that one causes the other.

Logical error that is routinely made.

Does the lack of clouds CAUSE it to be colder ?

Or is it that the COLD SOLAR VORTEX that blew in is very dry air which prevents cloud formation ?

Not simple answers. And day (incoming radiation/sunlight) and night (outgoing radiation/earth source) also have to be figgered into the above two questions.

And then you can also stir in humidity levels to the equation.

No clouds in the desert during day, desert gets much hotter. No clouds at night, desert cools off much faster.

All I can say is that in winter out here, when the clouds go away, grab your coat. Just look at our forecast. The 18th is both the sunniest and coldest day. That's typical.

The issue may be that cloudless days tend to come with cloudless NIGHTS.

De,
That first line came from the previous posting - which is why I bracketed it with '>>>'

The rest of what you typed is what I been saying - in wintertime (or the arctic) clear days and nights tend to be colder than cloudy days and nights.

And am I the only one who has noticed that on hot summer days . . . cloud cover tends to cool the air near the ground?

(And a look at your chart - Thursday 20 - temperature 19 degrees and cloudy with snow showers . . )
Zim.
