Re: “Tariffs provide revenue, and if offset by currency adjustments, present minimal inflationary or otherwise adverse side effects”
Tariffs SHOULD have a price inflationary side effect in nations like ours that are heavily dependent on foreign products. They should also encourage domestic production in the U.S. Maybe manufacturing will return! That would have a deflationary effect. While we can't compete with Chinese and Indian labor costs, we can compete rather well with countries against which we've set tariffs to offset their labor advantage.

On the other hand, I would expect most countries to retaliate if we implement tariffs against them. Nations like Brazil and Canada that, due to their abundant natural resources, carry a trade surplus with the U.S., probably can't do this effectively. But some can.

"Chapter 6: Conclusion
The next Trump term presents potential for sweeping change in the international economic system and possible
accompanying volatility. It is important for investors to understand the tools that might be employed for such
purposes, as well as the means by which government may attempt to avoid unwelcome consequences. This essay
attempts to provide a user’s guide: a survey of some tools, their economic and market consequences, and steps
that can be taken to mitigate unwanted side effects.

Wall Street consensus that an Administration has no means by which to affect the foreign exchange value of thedollar, should it desire to do so, is wrong."
