According to Julie Pace, the editor in question, Trump's move to ban the AP over their refusal to call the Gulf of Mexico the "Gulf of America" is actually "about something so much bigger" than his absurd renaming efforts.
"This is about freedom of speech and that is a principle, a right that Americans across the political spectrum believe in deeply,” Julie Pace said on ABC.
"This is about whether the government can control the language that we use, that ordinary people can use, and it’s about whether the government can retaliate against you if you don’t use the language that they prefer," she continued.
Pace has experience in dealing with Trump. Before she took on her current role in 2021, she served as the AP's bureau chief in Washington D.C. and covered the president's first disastrous term.
"We are standing up for that right, not just for the AP, but for all independent news organizations and for the public because we believe, again, that this is a principle, freedom of speech that all Americans, regardless of their political party, should believe in,” Pace she stated.
The AP is currently challenging Trump's ban in court and Pace remains optimistic about the road ahead.
"We certainly hope that it results in us being allowed back into cover White House events because we’re there to be the eyes and ears for Americans and people around the world," Pace said.
Every American, regardless of political affiliation, should stand with the Associated Press in this moment. Republicans are constantly bellowing about how much they support free speech. It's time for them to prove it.
