Ontario Premier Doug Ford is taking trump’s tariffs by the horns. Today he said, "If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything, including cut off their energy with a smile on my face. They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we're going to come back twice as hard.”
Here is a list of his retaliatory measures:
1. Energy exports: Ford threatened to cut off electricity exports to the United States, specifically targeting 1.5 million homes in Minnesota, Michigan, and New York. He stated he would impose a 25% surcharge on electricity exported to these states and potentially shut off power completely if tariffs intensify.
2. Government contracts: Ford banned all U.S.-based companies from participating in Ontario government procurement.
3. Alcohol sales: He directed the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to remove all American products from its shelves.
4. Starlink contract: Ford announced the termination of Ontario's nearly $100-million contract with Elon Musk's Starlink for high-speed internet access in rural areas.
5. Nickel exports: The premier mentioned the possibility of stockpiling nickel currently sold to the U.S. and selling it to other markets instead.
Ford emphasized that Ontario would match the U.S. tariff for tariff and encouraged other Canadian provinces to take similar stances. He also stated that these measures were necessary to protect Ontario workers and that the province needed to be prepared for a potentially long fight.
