A nice tribute I came across on FB...

And Then There Were…..
NONE

You would be hard pressed to find an example in the music business that the four men in this picture below had to endure going from fairytale to tragedy.

They actually came into the business for all of the right reasons. They wanted to play music, write songs, and see the world outside of their hometowns.

It started out as a fairytale. The Beatles and their newly formed label Apple chose them while they rejected people like David Jones (who would become David Bowie), and Crosby, Stills, Nash. They had Paul McCartney take an interest in them and wrote a guaranteed hit called “Come And Get It” to help them get more recognition. They were allowed to use the instruments that The Beatles themselves played on their songs. They got to record in the same studios and use the same recording equipment. They had George Harrison help produce one of their albums (Straight Up).

But it didn’t end there. They also became respected peers of The Beatles. John Lennon invited them to play on his 1971 “Imagine” album, and George Harrison invited them to take part in his groundbreaking benefit concert known as “The Concert For Bangladesh”.

They are successful. Their albums are not only selling, they also are getting played on American radio and having hit singles. They even have other artists recording songs they wrote and having massive success. Especially Harry Nilsson’s cover of their song “Without You” that becomes a massive number 1 hit.

What more could a young band ask for ?

Their plan was simple. They wanted to live on the bare minimum of money while they saved the rest so they could live comfortable lives once their popularity faded. Unfortunately they were too trusting of the people handling their money and were totally ripped off.

It that wasn’t enough, they were also disrespected by Allen Klein who was pulling the purse strings at Apple Records. Outside of The Beatles and their solo careers, Badfinger was the most profitable act at the label. The band was rewarded for all of their hard work by getting their recording budget cut, while other artists like Yoko Ono was given unlimited funds to make her albums.

Then they go to Warner Brothers Records, record what many feel is their best album in “Wish You Were Here” only to have it go immediately out of print because of missing money due to their thieving business manager Stan Polley. (Hope he’s rotting in Hell as we speak).

After that it all falls apart. Pete Ham finds out he’s broke and commits suicide. Years later Tom Evans also commits suicide because of pressing legal and money issues.

Joey Molland and Mike Gibbins have to wait for years until they are finally able to receive royalties again for their albums at Apple and Warner Brothers because of their legal issues.

And now with the loss of Joey Molland all four of these men are gone.

They were good men.

They were talented men.

They were not greedy men.

They just wanted to make music.

They all deserved so much better than they were given on this earth.
