Apples are good for dogs and some veggies are, as well. Peas are a common ingredient in dog food. BUT, no dog is a vegetarian. This woman you heard on NPR is nuckin' futz. I'm thankful that her former husband was able to escape, but it's a shame her kids have been so messed up.

...once upon a time I had a dog (a poodle and no snide comments) what ate apples. Ya had to cut em up into chunks and take the peel off. If ya didn't take the peel off the little critter would climb up on the sofa and spit em in ya lap. Very same dog if I forgot to take it for a walk before bedtime would take a dump in my bedroom shoes. I had a couple of dogs that would eat fried okra but neither me nor the dogs would eat that slimey boiled okra stuff. Not even with grits. The boiled okra is pretty good if ya boil it in stewed tomatoes with a few other veggies.
