Ukrainian forces are still in Russia, occupying over a thousand square kilometers of Russian territory. Russia gathered 78,000 troops to expel the 30,000 Ukrainians and that force as so far failed. Russia brought in 11,000 North Korea troops to assist in this effort and now a third of the North Koreans are casualties and have been withdrawn from combat. Russia paid a lot of money to the North Korean government for these troops, who fought well but were defeated.
This all began when Ukrainian forces made an unexpected raid into Russia’s Kursk area on August 2nd, 2024, and stayed. By early 2025 these Ukrainian forces were still in Russia. During the initial incursion, Russian security forces were exposed as inept and unprepared. The agency most at fault was the FSB. This is the 1990s successor to the Soviet era KGB. The FSB is not as large or as aggressive and competent as the KGB or its border guard forces. This was evident when Ukrainian troops rolled into Kursk province. It took the Russians over a month to show up and oppose, but not dispose of, the invaders. By early November Ukraine still occupied over a thousand square kilometers of Russian territory and the Russians were still unprepared to oust the Ukrainians. By early 2025 Russian forces had retaken about half of the Ukrainian occupied Russian territory.
