Re: “...nine miles is a long way to crawl.”
I assume that the Russians built some little electric sleds with a 20 mile or better range. One or two soldiers per sled... zipping to the far end at which point they either send the sled back... perhaps with a driver but maybe not, or hold onto the sled until a bunch of sleds and soldiers have arrived and send them all back at once. The latter approach would be waaaaaay faster. At the origin, all they'd need to do would be to swap out the battery and put a sled back into use. Someone said that the pipes may have been built with tracks in them... in which case this would have been even easier.

...nine miles is a long way to crawl. I don't think it's possible. Not even possible to Duck Walk that far. If there wasn't a trolley track and small trolley's for the troops and their equipment I am becoming more and more skeptical about it. Sounds more like something the rooskies want folks to believe rather than something that is true.
