Yeah, my father-in-law was a B-17 captain in the 8th Army Air Force. He already had his pilot's license before the war, so he got over to England and started flying missions, early - 1943. He completed his tour and they sent him back to the States to start training on the B-29 in anticipation of the invasion of Japan. Then, the atomic bombs were dropped and that was that.

I heard one or two good B-17 stories over the years. My dad's résumé follows.

Following Mission #35, everybody was given a break but expected to be recalled for a second tour. Then the war in Europe ended and the crew expected to be deployed and killed in Japan. That didn't happen either! Good timing.
