WOW.

Your father in law was flying over Germany without very good air support cover at that time.

He was likely a skilled pilot but also very lucky either a Messerschmidt didn't get him or shot down by the anti-aircraft guns.

Glad he made it.. Anytime a serviceman comes home from a war its a great day.. Far too many have not come back. we owe every one a huge debt of gratitude that never can be repaid..

Yeah, my father-in-law was a B-17 captain in the 8th Army Air Force. He already had his pilot's license before the war, so he got over to England and started flying missions, early - 1943. He completed his tour and they sent him back to the States to start training on the B-29 in anticipation of the invasion of Japan. Then, the atomic bombs were dropped and that was that.
