No Canadians allowed: Unusual cross-border library to close access
U.S. Homeland Security officials are closing off Canadian access to an unusual library in northern Vermont that straddles the international border.
The Haskell Free Library & Opera House's main entrance is in the U.S. town of Derby Line, but for decades Canadians have been allowed to visit the facility through a side entrance from Stanstead, Quebec, without going through border controls.
New rules from the U.S. government mean library officials must as of Monday limit access via the Canadian side to staff and people with disabilities, as a prelude to closing it off entirely later this year, library officials told USA TODAY.
