...robbery is a crime
...plain old theft is a crime
...embezzlment is a crime

The thing they all have in commone is that they are crimes.

I have always considered taxes to be any time the govt figures out a new way to rob, steal or embezzle money out of their citizens. So, to my little pin headed way of thinking income tax, sales tax, tariffs, fees, fines are all taxes. I like to keep things simple. Keeps me from tossing and turning at night worrying about who we should hang first.

Sire: most every single state already has

1. Wealth Tax (usually called a personal property tax, not just a tax on 'real estate'.)

2. Unrealized capital gains tax - also known as a 'property tax' - based upon the CURRENT unrealized increase in 'property value'. Ie. it's high cuz we sez it's high value - don't matter whats ya actually paid for it.

Texas does both - Californicate, New Yawk, Ohio, Taxachewzits, New Humpshire, etc, etc, etc.
