Re: “So I don't think your ideal is practical, even if it sounds enlightened.”
Have you ever been screwed by a grocery store? Maybe not, but I have. Many times. I once bought a $35 bag of fancy dog food that was discounted by half, then found as I left the store that they hadn't given me the discount. As the girl at the Customer Service Counter told me, "Good thing you caught this before leaving."

The store has improved (it used to be that they made mistakes, seemingly always in their favor, more often than not) but my policy is to not trust it. I always check my receipt.

Have you ever had to deal with a person who was overcharging you? Again, I have. Where I live, competition is scarce. Stores and contractors are often difficult to replace, so if there are problems, you're screwed unless you are cautious and diligent about correcting the "mistake" quickly.

Caution is practical. Enlightened and practical. The trick, I suppose, is to SOMETIMES trust, and many people and stores deserve our trust. (If you trust no one, it shows, and you'll soon find yourself being distrusted too. It's not pleasant.) You just have to develop a knack for reading people before you get harmed.

But government? Do you know the phrase, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me"? That's what comes to my mind when I think about our government.
