Independent research and consulting firm Strategy Analytics has predicted that more than 1 billion camera phones will be sold this year. The research firm indicated that camera phone sales will experience a 21 percent growth from the 918 million units sold in 2010, rising to 1,114 million in 2011. It added that sales of high-tier camera phones with eight megapixels and above will see the fastest growth.
"We forecast worldwide camera phone sales to grow 21 percent from 918 million units in 2010 to 1114 million units in 2011," analyst Neil Shah said. "This year will be the first time annual volumes of camera phones have exceeded the 1-billion mark. Some 4.2 billion camera phones have been sold cumulatively worldwide since 2000 and they are one of the most successful mobile products ever developed."
According to Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, sales of camera phones with sensors of eight megapixels and above will increase 240 percent in 2011. "Smartphone vendors, such as Nokia and HTC, are increasingly loading their flagship models with more megapixels to deliver improved imaging quality for premium operator services like augmented reality," he said in the Strategy Analytics report.
