Nokia Research Centre NRC R&DESPOO, Finland - According to Finnish private sector office-worker union Antti Rinne of Pro, Nokia plans to cut 6 000 jobs from its Research & Development (R&D) team, amounting to 38% of the workforce.
A partnership formed between Microsoft and Nokia could be the reason that prompted the union to warn towards this massive cut by the world's biggest mobile phone manufacturer - with the Redmond software giant providing the operating system, many of the engineers will no longer be needed to create and test this particular portion of mobile phones.
Nokia spends a massive EUR3bn in research needed to create its products, both feature-phones and smartphones, costing more than iPhone-maker Apple's R&D budget, reported at US$1.78bn.
There are currently 16 134 workers employed by the company just in the R&D sector, which has suffered jobs' cuts over the last few years. In what concerns to other sectors of the company, in 2008, 2 300 jobs were eliminated after closing Nokia's plant in Bochum, Germany; several more cuts have been witnessed around in Nokia offices and factories around the world.
