In 2009, the top and bottom five were:

Freest:
#1 - New Hampshire
#2 - Colorado
#3 - South Dakota
#4 - Idaho (another good choice for you???)
#5 - Texas

Least Free:
#5 - Maryland
#4 - California
#3 - Rhode Island
#2 - New Jersey
#1 - New York (My understanding is that people there place little to no value on freedom. Can anyone here corroborate this?)

About New York, the slideshow says "While New Hampshire, Colorado and South Dakota could all reasonably claim to be the freest state in the country, only New York is in contention for the least free title."

Wow. Why would any "American" want to live there?

Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months

I think I first posted about Colorado in 2009, here: #msg-392758

Sadly, the referenced pdf at the Mercatus.org site is now broken. Why does anyone ever take valuable information and articles DOWN?

Here's a slideshow on the five most and least free states. Due to its age, I think it was probably based on the Mercatus report.
