The current issue of AARP Bulletan (magazine) has "How Bad Off Is Your State?" as its featured article. It has a graph of "Projected deficits as a percentage of budget for fiscal 2012".The worst are Nevada(45%), New Jersey(37%), Texas(31%), and California(29%).

http://money.cnn.com/news/storysupplement/economy/state_debt/index.html

Interactive chart entitled "Your share of state debt" (debt per capita). I'm not sure of the date but assume it is current due to the copyright at the bottom.

On the other hand, I can't reconcile it with either the previous map NOR the picture which has been put out there re state shortfalls. This map shows each CA resident "only" having a $2k+ share of CA debt but that doesn't jibe well, imo, with the previous news of $20-$40Billion shortfalls in consecutive years!

I COULD USE YOUR HELP HERE IN SORTING OUT (1) THE REALITY OF THE STATE DEBT PROBLEMS *AND* (2) HOW THE STATES ARE DEALING WITH THEIR PROBLEMS. I CAN TELL YOU HOW CA IS "DEALING" WITH IT: THEY HAVE GONE PREDATORY ON THE SMALL BUSINESSES IN PARTICULAR AND THEY ARE LAUNCHING NUMEROUS "FISHING EXPEDITIONS" UNDER VARIOUS STORIES WHERE THEY ARE HITTING PEOPLE UP HERE AND THERE AND EVERYWHERE. I AM GETTING PROBABLY ONE NEW NOTICE OF AN UNKNOWN TAX PER *WEEK* IN THE LAST SIX WEEKS. THIS WEEK ALONE I HAVE BEEN HIT WITH *3* SURPRISE TAXES/ INQUIRIES.

The way a state is dealing with their problem is actually more of an issue to me than the actual debt. California is an awful, awful, awful, cesspool of a state in which to conduct business now. I suggest people stay the hell away and I am trying to think how and how quickly I can exit the state with 30+ jobs in tow. In reality, I will probably take more like 50+ jobs when I consider all the suppliers and knock on effects which will be affected by my taking my businesses to a less abusive environment.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get a feel for the better states to be in during this period of depression, I would appreciate it!
