'Gunsmoke' star James Arness dies at 88

Actor James Arness, best known for his role as Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke," has died at 88 of natural causes, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.
The 6-foot, 7-inch tall actor also starred in numerous other westerns, including the TV mini-series "How the West Was Won." He starred as the title detective in the short-lived "McClain's Law" in the 1980s. He was nominated for Emmys three times for his "Gunsmoke" role.
Arness was born in Minneapolis in 1923 as James Aurness, and saw combat in World War II. His brother, Peter, used the stage name Peter Graves and made a name for himself starring in "Mission: Impossible" and other offerings. Graves died in 2010.
