If you've been following the news there is new reason to believe cell phones are slowly cooking your brain (or other body part if held too close) and will prove, in time, to be a significant cancer source ... likely comparable, in their own way, to cigarette smoking.

The "cooking" part has already been proven and is simply a result of the microwave radiation. I understand that chemical changes in the brain after cell phone usage has also already been proven. But proving a cancer connection -- or lack thereof -- is harder. The thing about this sort of science is that it is statistical and, in particular, it requires statistics on HUMANS to really be proven. That takes decades, at a minimum, and when you consider smoking consider that it was probably 50 years between the early worries and the statistical proof of a cancer connection ... even though the connection now seems both obvious and overwhelmingly strong (I lost at least 5 close friends and relatives so far to cancer and all of them were smokers.... I'm not aware of anyone who has died of cancer in my circle who was not a smoker, although there may be someone).

So I decided recently to modify my cell phone use and I am trying to keep the phone at least an inch from my head, to NOT carry it in a pocket, and to try and get used to using speaker phone and blue tooth when I can. If there were a good smart phone which emphasized sound quality at a distance from the ear I would be really interested in it and would likely forego some other things to get that.

As I said, its going to take decades, at least, before this can be proven one way or another to statistical science levels. Until phones get safer (radiation and better support for away from the ear function) (which I think could happen quickly if the manufacturers cared) you have to decide for yourself if the RISK is worth the convenience.
