When I was a kid, I used to raid an abandoned almond orchard and, over the course of a few days, pretty much deplete it. One thing I learned: Grow some bamboo if you want to harvest nuts. There's nothing better for knocking them out of your trees.
You'd better have plenty of tarps, too, for catching the nuts.
Are you growing corn? It's one of the easiest starches to grow. And don't forget popcorn - which you can easily store long-term and eat whenever the starch cravings threaten to overwhelm.
And what about cattails? They're easy to grow if you have a boggy area. Except for the leaves, the entire plant is edible - at different times of the year. But the fuzzy part (the head) has to be eaten when it's still green, long before it's gone fuzzy . . . fizzy. LOL! In California, the edible period on cattail heads has already come and gone. You'd have gotten your starch by now. Cattails do taste starchy, though I'm not sure WHAT food group they actually fall into.
Cook cattail heads when they're very young, fried in butter or olive oil, or barbecued. You'll have to look online for ways to cook the rest of the plant.
