My father was in the Army hauling supplies from the Persian Gulf to Armenia where the Russians would pick them up. They had to drive across what was then Persia and they had no A/C. They were told when they first arrived that they would probably have to be rotated out every 6 months since it was felt that no 'white man' could survive the conditions there for much longer than that. He was still there 2 1/2 years later when the war ended. He said it got so hot at times that it would literally kill the scorpions. Often they could only drive their trucks at night since the tires would explode due to overheating during the day. They had to wear a hat and proper clothing at all times (you could be court-martialed for getting heat stroke if you hadn't been wearing a shirt while working out in the sun).

I guess they don't make soldiers like they used to ;-)
