Consider "where" you plant them, look for an area that may offer some protection from wind.

NH gets plenty of snow too, starts early & ends late, then the black flies. My friend in NH keeps me in the know ;))
"Snow" is an insulator, that can offer protection as weird as it sounds. clo

I'll give it a try! I notice one of the comments at your site is from someone in Buffalo. He says he's always had Black Walnuts in his yard.

I'm not sure how the temps compare, though. Buffalo gets tons of snow, but I'm not sure it gets as cold as NH. Then again, I haven't been through a NH winter. My concerns about it may be exaggerated.
