Bloomberg Ad: Gun-Show Loophole = Terror?

BY Celeste Katz

An ominous television ad commissioned by Mayor Bloomberg will soon blanket the airwaves — warning that Al Qaeda could exploit the so-called “gun-show loophole.”

Our Jonathan Lemire reports:

Bloomberg’s anti-gun alliance raises the alarm that terror thugs may be trying to buy powerful firearms within the U.S. The 30-second ad, which debuts today, uses images from a June 3 video released by Al Qaeda that features its American-born spokesman, Azzam Al-Amriki, urging would-be jihadists to get their guns here. (More after the video.)

“This is a golden opportunity,” said Al-Amriki. “America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms.”

“You can go down to a gun show and come away with a fully-automatic assault rifle without a background check,” Al-Amriki said on the terror tape. “So what are you waiting for?”

Bloomberg and his coalition — dubbed “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” — have long urged for the repeal of the gunshow loophole, which allows unlicensed sellers to peddle weapons without running a background check of the buyer.

“Criminals already know how to take advantage of gaps in our gun laws, and now Al Qaeda knows too,” said Bloomberg about the new commercial. “Weak gun laws aren’t just a crime problem, they’re a national security threat, and this ad should be a wake-up call to Congress.”

The loophole in the law allows background checks to be skipped during gun sales over the Internet as well.

Terror suspects have managed to purchase more than 1,300 weapons in the U.S. in the last seven years, federal data show. The commercial urges viewers to contact Congress to change the law, but some top Republicans on Capitol Hill have already dismissed the proposal.

“Simply because terrorists abuse our liberties doesn’t mean that we should limit the rights of law-abiding Americans,” Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told the congressional newspaper The Hill after Al-Amriki’s video first emerged.

“On the contrary, to limit our rights is to give in to terrorists and the fear they try to spread,” Smith said.
