Not necessarily. We didn't end up at war with Great Britain when we toppled her dominance 100 years ago. And Mutually Assured Destruction has kept India and Pakistan, and China and the USSR, from ever really getting into it.
My guess is that China will continue poking at us to test its limits and gradually expand its influence. I don't think it would intentionally start a full war, though. Already, neither side could hope to win.

fizzy, if globalization's a short term aberration, then we will likely end up at war with China when they gain srength enough to think they can win it. Or, maybe down the road a little further, but it's all but inevitable.
Why? China's not really into globalization. They're into locking in energy rights, globally, for themselves and using resources for themselves. Themselves. Keyword. Case in point is their cutting off the rest of the world from rare earths.
Not long ago, China would not entertain a non-Chinese business within China. I suspect the reason they do now is just to gain expertise. Likely a temporary phenomenon, just like the Islamist regimes of the Mid East use us.
