When I was at my alma mater a couple of weeks ago I talked to 3 senior Mechanical engineering students who will be graduating this come June. They had just returned from job interview trips, one to Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois, one to Union Pacific in Omaha, Nebraska and the last was at Dow Chemical in Midland, Michigan. In the first two cases, the students were told that there definitely were job openings and that they would be hiring this year to fill them. Both of these guys felt that they had a very good chance of getting an offer. As for the third student, she was actually made an offer right there on the spot and was giving it serious consideration. I asked how other students are faring and they felt that their experiences where pretty much what others had been seeing, so while this was a very limited 'survey', it was still very positive.
