One of our priests is a Biblical scholar and I'll bet if he were asked about how did December 25th finally became the 'official' birthday for Jesus that his response would not be all that different than what Linus stated. I know because I've attended many of the 'classes' he holds for members of our church, particularly during the Lenten season and during Advent. In his last class we had a really good discussion of some of the interesting bits of church history that is not often talked about including the lives of the Saints. He recommended, and I just read on my last flight back East, a small book titled 'Saints Behaving Badly: The Cutthroats, Crooks, Trollops, Con Men, and Devil-Worshippers Who Became Saints', by Thomas J. Craughwell.

re: "Then why did you make the smartass remark..."

It wasn't a smartass remark. It was a sincere remark.

Since you regularly address your congregation, you really should see what happens if you read what Linus says in this cartoon to your congregation - then conclude it by bemoaning the fact that "Faux news" doesn't promote Christmas this way.

It's clear how you feel about Christmas.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall at your church if you told them that "December 25th is associated with the birth of many pagan Gods," and that Christianity "imported many of these pagan myths into its own traditions."

Every time I hear you speak of religion, it becomes clearer that you're a man who holds it in enormous contempt. Oh, sure, you donate money. And you donate time. You probably go through ALL the motions. And you make a point at every opportunity of reminding others how important your religion is to you. But, of every internet person I've encountered, you set about worst example I know of of LIVING your religion by practicing what it teaches.

Frankly, I don't know why you go to church at all. If there's a Catholic heaven, you SURE aren't headed for it. My guess is that you go because it would embarrass your family too much if they knew the truth about you, the brother of a Catholic priest.
