Anyone want to take bets on how the "rank-and-file" responds?

I was listening to Thom Hartmann earlier today and he suggested that if Boehner can't come to a deal with the Tea Baggers, that he should resign his speakership and turn it over the Eric Cantor and hang the Albatross around his neck. Then Boehner can claim that he sacrificed his leadership position for the good of the REAL Republican party and let the Tea Baggers stew in their own juices.

House Republican leaders are discussing a plan to end the standoff over the president's payroll tax cut by sending a tweaked version back to the Senate that agrees to a two-month extension, according to GOP aides. The proposal would also include language designed to accelerate negotiations for a full-year deal in January, these sources said. House Republican leaders were scheduled to talk with their rank-and-file colleagues on a 5 p.m. conference call.
