(CNN) - President Barack Obama's reelection campaign returned political donations made by Jon Corzine, the embattled former Democratic governor and senator from New Jersey, on Friday.
The move comes as Corzine endures increased scrutiny following the bankruptcy of his brokerage firm MF Global. Corzine was CEO of the company until it declared bankruptcy in October and he subsequently resigned. Hundreds of millions of dollars in customer funds from MF Global are still missing.
An Obama campaign aide said Friday the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee returned the donations by Corzine and his wife. The donations totaled $70,000.
Corzine and his wife each donated $30,800 to the DNC, which has been returned.
Additionally, Corzine and his wife each made $5,000 donations to the Obama reelection campaign, which was also returned.
