Rep. Elton Gallegly will not seek reelection in 2012, he announced Saturday. "The decision to step aside at this time did not come lightly," the California Republican said in a statement. "It has been an honor and a privilege to have served our communities and our country for the past 25 years and I look forward to continue to do so for the next year."

Gallegly, who was elected to the House in 1996, will forgo an uphill race against fellow GOP Rep. Buck McKeon. The two Republicans had been thrust into the same Ventura County-area district by an independent redistricting commission.
