On the drive-time this morning there was a discussion about a book titled "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed", by Jared Diamond, where he says that based on historical records which go back several millennia that societies where those who had the most worked closely with those who did not, that they survived through even the hardest of times. However, in those where the elite kept to themselves and ignored the plight of the poorest members of their society, that in the end they were simply the last to die when that society crashed and burned, whether it was due to internal or external events.
