kathy,
GM!

The problem I h ave with this "A partisan, highly nonscientific debate has erupted over whether extreme right-wing rhetoric could have inflamed whatever illness he may have and caused him to target Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords. "

is that in 99 percent of the cases, it is highly inflammatory LEFT WING rhetoric, accusing the conservative right of things like:
1, being against the children
2, Being against ALL imigrants
3. Being against having clean water or clean air.
4. being against minorities of any kind
5. NOT being compassionate or caring.

The list could be endless.
In their small view, they are so enraged that mainstream does not just roll over and capitulate that they RAGE ON about every disagreement as to HOW ARE WE GOING TO PAY FOR SOMETHING without raising taxes even more and raising the national debt even more than the current crop of left wingers has done already in only three years time.

You will find that the extreme rhetoric does not emanate from the right. It normally always begins at the left and eventually gets responded to.

There is no accounting for Jared.
He was a liberal crackpot.
He tried to kill a liberal congress person. That makes no logical sense other than he may be just another copy cat mass killer.

In my view, there is way too much of this stuff given publicity, which only emboldens those who think it is a game, to try to "top that".

Just my opinion.

Navigating the cluttered corridors of Jared Loughner's mind will take psychiatrists months or years. We will likely never know all the reasons he took a cab to that Safeway on Jan. 8, paid with a $20 bill, calmly got his change and then killed six people and wounded 14 others.

But snapshots of his life are accumulating from acquaintances and his few friends. (His parents issued a short statement of apology, but they are said to be too distraught to speak about their son.) These snapshots depict a quiet, normal boy who had grown into a man descending steadily into serious mental illness. A partisan, highly nonscientific debate has erupted over whether extreme right-wing rhetoric could have inflamed whatever illness he may have and caused him to target Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords. We don't know the answer, but psychological research suggests that political rhetoric could never be the single cause that leads a person with complex mental problems to commit violence.
