Weco:
How can you not be a football better?
Explanation:
Three betting lines are included: spread, total, and the money odds.
1. Point Spread: Patriots are a 7 1/2 point favorites over the Ravens. If you pick the Patriots you must win by more than 7 1/2 points to win your bet. If you choose the Ravens, the must win or not lose by more than 7 1/2 points. Ties (there obviously can not be a tie with a point spread that specifies a 1/2 point), with neither winning or losing (bet is nullified). You must bet $11 dollars for each $10 you hope to win. This 10% is the "vig" or the bookmaker's profit.
The 49ers are 2 1/2 point favorites over the Giants. If just went down from 3 points. If you bet it an hour ago you would have had to give 3 points. If you bet it now, only 2 1/2. It will contine to fluctuate up to game time.
2. The "Total" or over/under is a number representing total points scored by both teams in the game. You can bet under that total or over that total. again laying 11-10 odds.
3. The "money odds" or more commonly the money line, are two dollar numbers indicating how much you must bet to win $100 if you bet on the favorite, or how much you will win if you bet $100 on the underdog. No point spread is used. You could bet a $140 on the 49ers (the favorite) to win $100, or you could bet $100 on the Giants (the underdog) to win $120. The difference between $140 and $120 represents the bookmaker's profit. The money line is expressed as
-$140 +120.
I made a few bucks this weekend which made the results even more pleasing. Betting makes the games more interesting and tense, especially if the game is a rout. I don't bet very often, and only for relatively modest amounts, but I do talk with serious gamblers each week. Thirty years ago, I was a serious handicapper and a serious better.
