Madison - Recall organizers filed 20,600 signatures Tuesday to force a recall election against state Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald - the first of what is expected to be six filings against Republicans including Gov. Scott Walker.
Recall supporters gathered on the steps of the Government Accountability Board, placing white banker boxes of petitions in front of the doors. Volunteers wrote messages in marker on the boxes as news photographers flashed pictures.
"These boxes contain our hopes, our hard work and 20,600 signatures," recall organizer Lori Compas told supporters just before filing the three boxes.
The signatures filed by the group trying to recall Fitzgerald amounted to 123% of the 16,742 valid signatures that would be needed to force a recall election. Fitzgerald had no immediate comment Tuesday, saying his campaign would release one later in the day.
Compas said Friday she would not be a candidate, but on Monday she held out the possibility she might.
"A lot of people have been asking me that - I have no idea," she said when asked if she would run. "If no other suitable candidate can be found, I guess I would be open to this."
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, Democrats intend to make the long awaited filings against Walker and the others as they seek to recall a governor for only the third time in the history of the nation. But Walker, scheduled to attend a fundraiser in New York City, wasn't near the statehouse Tuesday.
Former U.S. Rep. David Obey, who has been in state politics for a half century, called the recall effort "an amazing development."
But, "what is unprecedented is the way that the governor and his allies ran roughshod over normal legislative and political procedures," said Obey, declining to say if he might run against Walker. "He's abused the very process that elected him and that's what's got people so angry."
