(from another board, obviously..)
To be a goober you have to be more than ignorant. I know a lot of very ecent people who aren't very worldly or well educated. TO be a real goober you have to be ignorant and mean spirited. Watch any Republican rally and tell me the goobers aren't taking over.
When big money organized the Tea Party and the Republicans courted the most extreme segments of the right, 2010 gave them a sense of power they've never felt before. They like it.
The mean-spiritedness was always there. They just didn't have a platform before, didn't realize how many people were as evil and cruel and immoral as they were, and had no idea they could band together to inflict maximum punishment on the rest of us.
Gingrich will will South Carolina because he's the most vicious of the lot. He throws them the red meat, and they have a vast hunger for red meat.
You see it on the boards every day. Expressions of a longing for a violent and murderous purging of "liberals and atheists" from America -- along with, of course, any black and hispanics not absolutely necessary for cannon fodder or manual labor -- are posted on a regular basis. These people would be thrilled to watch liberals and atheists and blacks and hispanics in the Roman Colisseum with lions, being torn apart and their entrails scattered.
Much of America has regressed to a state of primitive rage, where a sense of impotence is giving way to the possibility of inflicting real, bodily punishment on their preferred scapegoats. This new feeling of impending power makes them identify more with the already powerful than with the weak and vulnerable and they revel in a thrilling sense that maybe they really are "superior" to liberals, atheists, blacks, hispanics and uppity women, after all, and that the time when they will rule -- with lip-licking anticipation of ruthless "payback" -- is now at hand.
If Obama wins in November, I suspect one of two things will happen. Either the rage will erupt in mass violence, as a consequences of "coming so close" to gaining the upper hand, or they will sink back into a simmering, angry depression as their dreams are shattered once again.
It's entirely cultural. The economic aspects are peripheral. These people hate for cultural reasons, and assume that their economic plight is merely evidence of how righteous their hatred must be, for those they hate are the ones they hold responsible for it. Without liberals, atheists, blacks and hispanics, this would be their world, their country, their paradise. We're the ones depriving them of their rightful place in society. We're the ones who thwart their desire for power.
