re: "Looks to me like..."
Thinking like a juror, here are my thoughts.
If there are powder burns on the the kid's clothes, then there was probably a fight going on or at least brewing. If I'm a kid (or an adult for that matter) and someone pulls a gun on me, I'm backing away. Fast. I might even turn my back and run. I'm definitely NOT going to walk toward the gunman or let him walk toward me. So, powder burns suggests that Zimmerman was defending himself while the kid was right there, in his face, not trying to get away. I haven't heard anything about the kid being cornered, so presumably he had room to back away if he'd been so inclined.
No powder burns makes it murder . . . or at least a crime. The kid was at a distance, not attacking, and there is a much smaller chance that Zimmerman was in fear for his life. (But the chance doesn't drop to zero. The kid may conceivably have been running toward Zimmerman when the shot was fired.)
It could also be that the gun was aimed by Zimmerman but fired accidentally. Some guns have VERY light triggers, and in an adrenaline situation it would be easier than most folks (particularly liberals and women who are so afraid of guns that they won't even pick one up, much less learn how to use it) think to fire it unintentionally.
What say you to THAT, former-policeman-ribit??
