Size has very little to do with it, ability does. I've seen small guys like that tear apart much bigger and fairly capable guys more than once. At 17 a guy that knows how to fight can be very difficult to deal with because of their quickness.
Having said that I have a big problem with defending yourself in a fistfight with a gun. The way to defend yourself in a fistfight is with your fists.
