40 mpg? That would be amazing. It has always seemed to me that airplanes should get far better mileage than they do, particularly on long flights. The air has so little resistance compared to ground travel.
I always figured that the explanation for the "inefficiency" must lie in the enormous energy required to overcome gravity. Maybe not. I hope your plane can do what it says!
