clo,
re: "(this IS legit, clo)"
No, clo. It is NOT legitimate. If you'd bothered to read the Snopes document you cited, you'd have known that you contaminated the truth when you took statements out of context. Snopes says:
As for Limbaugh himself, the broadcaster stated that he was not drafted during the Vietnam War because he had been classified 4-F after a physical found that he had an "inoperable pilonidal cyst" and "a football knee from high school." He added: "I made no effort to evade it or avoid it."
A little further down, the Snopes article states quite clearly:
Which of the two stated medical reasons was the primary one behind Limbaugh's 1-Y classification is difficult to determine directly since individual medical files held by his draft board have long since been destroyed.
The article then continues with speculation that the main medical reason was the cyst - conclusions drawn from interpretations of Limbaugh's behavior and not fact.
Consider the 7 "Critical Thinking" practices I posted earlier today:
1. Have a healthy level of scepticism
2. Look for hard data, not assumptions, arguments and conclusions
3. If there’s not enough data then no conclusion can be formed
4. Look for and verify assumptions
5. Look for circumstances where the conclusion may be found false
6. Make strong attempts to overcome your biases.
7. Be willing to change your conclusions in the face of new data
Of these, I can surmise that several failures probably led to your premature acceptance of incorrect facts. But critical thinking requires self-analsysis of your mental processes, not analysis by someone else. I can't do it for you. I, for instance, have no way of knowing whether you would be willing "to overcome your biases" or "change your conclusions in the face of new data." (I've apparently given you some new data, though. Are you willing to change your conclusions?)
I hope you find this helpful. After your earlier post about the 4th graders, I suspect that you would like to improve your critical thinking abilities.
