"The second is to slash spending for military AND social programs asap, commencing a severe 3-5 year recession that no supporting politician will survive. Reduced government will also reduce taxes, cleanse the nation of unhealthy businesses, and create an economic climate that is rich with opportunity. Ultimately, the country will pay down its debt and grow its way back into prosperity."

I like that DE............ Cutting social programs sours my stomach a little, but not as bad as the hurt in my gut now if we continue this maddness. IMHO we should have let the failing companies FAIL, back in 2008-09. We might have something that resembles a "recovery" now. Big pain for a few years but far more acceptable then dragging this scam out for eternity!!

Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

re: '"To shrink our military smaller and smaller to pay for our social needs." The other path, Romney said, is "to commit to preserve America as the strongest military in the world, second to none, with no comparable power anywhere in the world."

What a shame. Romney is correct about there being two paths, but they aren't the paths he describes.

The first is to continue as we are, expanding government for the sake of expanding government, doing less for 'the masses' than was being done in 1950, but enriching cronies, politicians and favored corporations through sweetheart deals. Year-by-year, this path increases the chunk of GDP that services the debt. Eventually, further debt will be declined to the United States, plunging it and the world into an uncontrolled Depression that will last a generation, spawning wars and killing millions.

The second is to slash spending for military AND social programs asap, commencing a severe 3-5 year recession that no supporting politician will survive. Reduced government will also reduce taxes, cleanse the nation of unhealthy businesses, and create an economic climate that is rich with opportunity. Ultimately, the country will pay down its debt and grow its way back into prosperity.

Our politicians are in charge - which leaves us with *NO* doubt as to which of these two paths will be taken.
