re: "You're a brave fellow."
My portfolio is diverse. I've got dollar-backed investments I gamble with (such as the 401(k)), assets that should appreciate with inflation (such as liquor, firearms, land), depreciating assets that I use and enjoy (my truck, my tractor, the house up North), and assets out of direct U.S. control (foreign currencies.)
So, I don't know about being brave. The 401(k) is a damned-if-you-do / damned-if-you-don't proposition. Whether it's in the markets or not, it's probably going to lose value in real terms. It doesn't actually take courage to leap from a tall building when the only alternative is staying put and burning to death.
Gold is $1,581/oz today. When it hits $2,000, it will be up 26.5%. Let's see how long that takes. - De 3/11/2013 - ANSWER: 7 Years, 5 Months
